Cultural Promotion

With our cultural promotion activities, which include the operation of communication websites, the support for creative activities, the producing of exhibitions and events, hosting the CG Contest for Students, and research studies, the CG-ARTS is engaged in various activities mainly in the field of media art, as we believe to foster a new culture it is important to evaluate new talent and introduce these to society.

CG Contest for Students

The CG Contest for Students has expanded over time to include more categories, and has grown as ‘a gateway to success’ for young artists. Today, with the spread of social media the relationship between the creator and society is changing significantly, and from this year’s contest which will mark its 17th year, the contest will take on a new concept, presenting a new platform where the artists and the audience will connect reciprocally.

Communication Activities

Various activities are conducted worldwide to create a new culture. In addition to researching global trends in media art including art, animation, manga, and games, we are working together with leading festivals and museums. We have also created websites such as the "Japan Media Arts Plaza" and "DEPARTURE" to disseminate information on new culture.

Japan Media Arts Plaza (since 1999)
Collaboration projects with national and international festivals etc. (since 2003)
Surveys on the current state of media arts festival worldwide (since 2011)

 DEPARTURE (since 2011)

Creative Support

In order to promote new culture, a variety of support is necessary. We hold contests and support the creative work of young artists in the media art field, for the purpose of evaluating new talent and introducing them in to society. From this year, stepping one step ahead of merely evaluating and offering opportunities of presentations, we will support the creative activities of young artists.

Producing Exhibitions and Events

The CG-ARTS has been involved from the start-up stage of the Japan Media Arts Festival, and has been responsible for not only the planning and direction, but also a wide range of responsibilities including production and management as one of the organizers. In its 14 years of history, the Japan Media Arts Festival has grown 3.6 times in the number of applicants, and 32 times in the number of visitors. Since 2002, we have promoted the festival’s globalization, including the hosting of the Japan Media Arts Festival international exhibition. And beginning this year, we will go beyond the framework of the Japan Media Arts Festival, to produce exhibitions and events in a broad range of genres including art, animation, and manga.
